It was always intended that Beijing’s iconic National Aquatics Center would transition into a family recreation facility after the 2008 Olympics. FORREC led the design project, meeting the challenge to complete The Happy Magic Water Cube within a tight two-year timeline. Inspired by the building’s unique watery skin, FORREC saw the opportunity to create a fantastical underwater kingdom. Covering 12,000 sq m, giant translucent air bubbles, suspended jellyfish, stylized schools of fish and coral-like column coverings give the impression of being magically submerged. Completed in just 17 months, The Happy Magic Water Cube transports almost 3,000 guests at any one time to a true water world that’s gained stature as one of the world’s leading indoor water park attractions. The project won the World Waterpark Association’s Industry Innovation Award in 2010.
