FORREC was retained by Pursuit to review the entire visitor center to assess the existing conditions of the facility and plan for crowd handling, visitor experience and commercial opportunities to upgrade this tourist destination.
For phase one, our client’s goal was to create dining experiences that guests could enjoy while enjoying a view of the Athabasca Glacier. FORREC’s concept was inspired by the beauty of the icy wonderland outside, and the desire to feel cozy and warm. The opportunity to design two restaurants meant each restaurant had its own distinct relationship with the grand centerpiece.
One restaurant conveys an icy environment with cool tones, crisp, contemporary lines and a ceiling designed to look like shards of ice. The other communicates the warmth and coziness of a ski chalet, offering a central fire pit, rich, dark woods, rough stone and hammered metal. Both are designed to enhance the future redevelopment of the discovery centre into a spectacular attraction. Opened in 2017, the restaurants have become a popular stop at the Glacier Discovery Centre.
