Toronto Public Library: Scarborough Civic Centre

Toronto, Canada

A prime example of innovative ecological design, the 100th branch of the Toronto Public Library includes a 1,550 square metre green roof. This key feature is designed using an ecological analogue – a little bluestem alvar creating a self-sustaining habitat for birds and insects. Native plants cover 50% of the roof and improve the ecological performance of the entire surface area.

The four sloped sections of the roof can be viewed from several vantage points and support a variety of plant species that provide visual interest year-round. A gently sloped and planted ramp provides an accessible connection to the adjacent civic square and gives visitors a close-up view of the roof. A new civic green provides seating, native plants and an accessible walkway while maintaining open views to the Civic Centre. The public realm design completes the first phase of Scarborough Civic Centre District Urban Design Guidelines.
