What do you do with an abandoned spur line beside an active rail corridor? Transform it into a park and multi-use trail that connects communities along its 2.1 kilometre route. How? The design restores historical rail bridges to provide safe crossing over busy roadways, and adds an accessible ramp. We preserved and enhanced native plant communities and natural habitat, including a functioning wetland.
Where the neighbourhood streets intersect the trail, community plazas provide pleasant gathering and resting places. Public art installations along the way create points of interest and a sense of discovery. The railpath’s design successfully integrates its natural, industrial and railway heritage to create a unique urban park and a safe walking and cycling route.
