The Pride of Canada carousel was commissioned to be a notable Markham attraction. Our client wanted an outdoor space that showcases the carousel while providing a central place where people can meet and linger. Benches furnish seating in sun and shade and a large reflecting pool is set directly in front of the open glass pavilion that houses the carousel.
The pool transforms into a skating rink in winter, with a water play feature at one end for summer fun. Permeable pavers manage rainfall on the plaza, and native plants and grasses soften the space and define its boundaries. A large bioswale adjacent to the square infiltrates storm water run-off, providing a low impact and sustainable design solution. The plaza’s flexible design can accommodate larger functions by connecting directly to the adjacent parking lot with no curbs or grade changes.
