York University Student Centre

At the north end of Roy McMurtry Green in the heart of York University’s Keele Campus, the new Student Centre is a node for student interaction and engagement. The landscape extends the interior functions with spaces for solitary and group work, quiet reflection or vibrant expression. The East Plaza welcomes users from the main transportation hub, providing sheltered cluster seating and ample bicycle parking while maintaining clear views to the Green beyond. Informal seating along Library Lane provides short term meeting areas and social spaces. A plaza at the east is a year-round and all-weather flexible gathering space with various levels of shelter: under trees, under building canopy, and open. The south plaza is divided into two unique spaces. A Bosque at the main floor projects from the multifaith prayer room above to create an equally tranquil and reverent space outdoors. Just below, large slabs of rock and a planted edge with a feature stair to the main level mitigate a steep slope while providing a dramatic backdrop to an outdoor amphitheater ideal for movie nights.
