East York Civic Commons

Preserving East York’s sense of community and heritage was key to the design of this revitalization. A strong central axis connects the memorial fountain and cenotaph to a new hard surface civic plaza, stepped seating and the civic building itself. The plaza design accommodates large events like Remembrance Day services, a weekly farmers’ market and any other civic functions.

Permeable pavers provide the much-needed hard surface area while minimizing storm water run-off. Rainwater filters through to special soil cells that support the pavers while providing passive irrigation for the large canopy tree growth. Native red oaks frame the view and provide natural shade over the hardscape. The plaza gives residents a place to gather and celebrate their community.
